About Roderick
Roderick J. Flaherty is a retired Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice who joined Renaud Law in 2022 and continues to practise civil, family, and criminal litigation. He was appointed to the bench in 1990, sat in Dryden, and presided across Northwestern Ontario, where he helped pioneer sentencing circles in remote communities, before later serving in Brampton and Toronto until his retirement in 2014. Two of his decisions were upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada, and he served as a director of the Ontario Judges' Conference. Before his judicial appointment, he spent a decade as senior counsel with the federal Department of Justice in Toronto, conducting major prosecutions and negotiating tax-related mutual assistance agreements with several European governments. Roderick was first called to the bar in 1964 and practised generally in Port Colborne, where he also served as City Solicitor, before his appointment to the bench in 1980. He is a member of both the Criminal and Family Legal Aid panels and accepts Legal Aid certificates.
