Spain has practised criminal and penal law in private practice since being called to the bar in 1978, appearing daily before the Court of Quebec's criminal and penal chamber and representing clients in jury trials for many types of offences. In February 2017 he received the Association quebecoise des avocats et avocates de la defense's award for advancement of the law, and in December 2019 his Trois-Rivieres colleagues recognized him as the district's most involved lawyer.
