About Basi Law

Basi Law is a solo estates and trusts practice on Major Mackenzie Drive East in Richmond Hill, Ontario, founded by Katy Basi in 2012. Basi was called to the Ontario Bar in 1997, with the third highest grade in Estate Planning, and holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business alongside a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. Before opening the firm, Basi practiced income tax law at a business law firm, and that tax background now shapes how the firm builds wills, trusts, and powers of attorney around each client's finances.

The practice covers wills and powers of attorney, estate planning and administration, and trust law, including planning tools such as family trusts and alter ego trusts for clients organizing their affairs during life or after a death in the family. Basi earned the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation from STEP Canada in 2014, the same year Basi received STEP Canada's Gerald W. Owen Book Prize for the highest overall mark nationwide across its four Diploma courses, and became a Law Society of Ontario Certified Specialist in Estates and Trusts Law in 2024. Basi has written on estate and tax planning for outlets such as The Blunt Bean Counter and Today's Parent, and has been quoted in The Globe and Mail.
