Gerry Schaffer, a lifelong Waterloo Region resident, started practising law in 1982. That came after an LL.B. from Queen's University, plus two psychology degrees: an honours B.A. at the University of Waterloo and an M.A. at the University of Guelph.
Two more Schaffers practise alongside Gerry. Zack Schaffer took an honours B.A. in legal studies at Waterloo, went to England for an LL.B. at the University of Kent in Canterbury, and was called to the bar in 2016. Gerry's son Sam Schaffer, a barrister and solicitor, paired an honours legal studies degree at Waterloo with a psychology minor, then earned an LL.B. at the University of Sussex in Brighton and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall.

The neighbourhood
The office is at 284 Frederick Street in Kitchener. Central Frederick sits in the heart of downtown Kitchener, its bounds running out to the expressway, Victoria, Lancaster, Weber Street East and Krug, and one of its Little Free Libraries is at 289 Frederick St. The park where Mansion, Edna and Frederick Streets meet has a tennis court, a seasonal rink, a community garden and a playground, among other things.
In the late 1800s, back when the city was still named Berlin, the area lay nearer the outskirts. Even the Frederick Street Mall was thought of as an edge-of-town site when it first went up in the 1950s. The yearly Frederick Street Art Walk is one of the neighbourhood's better-known events.
The office stands on land that's the traditional home of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe and Neutral People. It's part of the Haldimand Tract, promised to the Six Nations and stretching six miles out from either bank of the Grand River.
