About Cafengiu Law

Cafengiu Law is a small Kitchener firm that concentrates on family law and on wills and estates. It works from a single office on Madison Avenue North, just east of downtown Kitchener, and takes clients from across Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, and the towns around them. The family law side covers uncontested divorce, joint custody and parenting arrangements, separation agreements, property division, and cohabitation and marriage contracts. On the estates side, the firm drafts wills and powers of attorney, helps parents name guardians for minor children, and assists people who need to be appointed estate trustee, including when someone dies without a will.

The practice was founded in 2014 and now runs as Cafengiu Law under Bogdan Cafengiu, who has practised family law since graduating from Queen's University law school in 2004 and holds an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Waterloo. Its roots in the region reach back further than the current name. An earlier Kitchener-Waterloo lawyer, Jagdat Vincent Toolsie, practised here for close to 25 years after earning a law degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1969. You don't have to come in for a first meeting, since consultations can be done over Zoom or in person, and the firm sets out the work and its cost in writing before starting.

The neighbourhood

The office is on Madison Avenue North, a residential street just east of downtown Kitchener, near the Central Frederick neighbourhood. The Central Frederick Neighbourhood Association describes the area as nestled in the heart of downtown Kitchener, brimming with history, tall mature trees, pocket parks, and community spirit. For a practice built around family matters and estate planning, a house-scale office on a quiet street suits the work, since these are private conversations that don't really belong in a downtown tower. And because the firm takes clients from Cambridge and Guelph as well as the twin cities, a central-Kitchener address keeps it roughly equidistant for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cafengiu Law handle divorce, custody, and separation agreements?
Yes. Family law is one of the firm's two main areas, and it covers uncontested divorce, joint custody and parenting arrangements, separation agreements, property division, and cohabitation and marriage contracts. Matters can be worked out through negotiation or, when needed, taken through the courts.
Can the firm prepare my will and powers of attorney?
Yes. On the wills and estates side, Cafengiu Law drafts wills and powers of attorney for property and personal care, helps parents name a guardian for minor children, and assists people applying to act as estate trustee, including when a family member dies without a will.
Can I meet with the firm without coming in to the office?
Yes. An initial client consultation can be done over Zoom or in person, and payments can be made by e-transfer. Call or email the Kitchener office to set up a time.
What is a retainer, and how does billing work?
A retainer has two parts. The first is a written legal services agreement that describes the work to be done and the expected cost. The second is a deposit that's held in trust and drawn down as work is completed and billed. Bills itemize the dates, time, and tasks, any leftover funds are returned at the end, and payment plans are possible in some cases.
What areas does Cafengiu Law serve?
The firm works from one office at 57 Madison Avenue North in Kitchener and serves clients across Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, and the surrounding area.
