Kapoor Barristers is a small Toronto firm that focuses entirely on criminal and regulatory law, and it's built around trial and appellate work rather than a general practice. The office is at 26 Wellington Street East, in the city's Old Town district. Founding lawyer Anil K. Kapoor was called to the Ontario bar in 1988 and appears regularly before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Court of Appeal for Ontario, and has also appeared as counsel in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Quebec. The firm represents individuals, corporations, governments, and regulatory bodies, and its docket runs from criminal trials to constitutional and national security matters.
Kapoor's public roles extend past casework. Kapoor served as commission counsel to the Commission of Inquiry into the Bombing of Air India Flight 182, was later added to the Minister of Justice's roster of security-cleared Special Advocates, and was appointed to the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on National Security. Kapoor also teaches as an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in Canada for criminal defence since 2022. The rest of the team brings its own record of clerkships at the Federal Court and the Superior Court of Justice, plus a turn as commission counsel to the Public Order Emergency Commission, so the depth doesn't rest on one lawyer alone.
By appointmentThe firm's office sits at 26 Wellington Street East, in what's known today as Old Town Toronto, the original site of the town of York, founded in 1793. The same district is still home to St. Lawrence Market, which has operated continuously since 1803, and to 19th century landmarks such as the Gooderham (Flatiron) Building and St. Lawrence Hall.
The neighbourhood was industrial land into the 1970s, when redevelopment led by then mayor David Crombie, with input from urban planner Jane Jacobs, turned it into the mixed commercial and residential district it is today. Kapoor Barristers now practices out of an office tower on the same streets.
