About Craig Penney Law

Craig Penney Law is a sole practitioner criminal defence practice in downtown Toronto, run by Craig Penney out of an office on Carlton Street. Penney graduated summa cum laude in 1988, earned a master's degree in 1989, and completed Osgoode Hall Law School in 1992, then went straight into criminal defence work as a sole practitioner in Toronto. According to the firm's site, that adds up to 30 years of defending clients in criminal court.

The practice takes on the full range of criminal charges, including assault, threats and weapons offences, theft and fraud, drug offences, criminal harassment, driving offences, computer crimes, and allegations of sexual assault or voyeurism. It also handles bail hearings and arrest warrant matters, and advises people who are under police investigation but haven't yet been charged. The firm's site describes its approach as taking on a client's problem as its own and giving education based advice rather than making promises about outcomes.

The neighbourhood

The office is at 120 Carlton Street, right on the corner of Carlton and Jarvis, in a mixed office and residential building that looks out over Allan Gardens. That park opened to the public in 1860 and its conservatory, with its greenhouses of orchids, cacti, and tropical plants, is one of the oldest public gardens still standing in downtown Toronto. The surrounding blocks are known as the Garden District, a name the city adopted in 2001 and later backed with formal heritage status in 2021.

It's a short walk from the College subway station, so clients coming from elsewhere in the city don't need to worry about parking to get to a meeting.
