About Dickie & Lyman Lawyers LLP

Dickie & Lyman Lawyers LLP is a small Ottawa firm that focuses on residential tenancy law, municipal property tax and assessment law, commercial tenancy law, and government relations. Founders John Dickie and David Lyman began practicing together in December 1999 and formed a formal partnership in November 2003. The firm represents landlords, property owners, property managers and appraisers rather than tenants, appearing before Ontario's Landlord and Tenant Board and the Assessment Review Board and advocating to elected officials and government staff on rental housing and property tax policy.

John Dickie earned a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Economics from Carleton University in 1977 and a Bachelor of Laws from McGill University in 1981, and has practiced residential rent control and landlord and tenant law in Ottawa since 1982 and municipal property tax assessment law since 1992. David Lyman earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from York University in 1995 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto in 1998, was called to the bar in February 2000, and has practiced alongside Dickie since 1999. Dickie and Lyman co-authored the textbook Working with the Residential Tenancies Act, published by Emond Montgomery Publications and updated through at least a fourth edition by 2017. Dickie has also served as President of the Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations and has appeared before House of Commons committees on rental housing policy.
