About Michael Peterson Law

Michael Peterson Law is a solo criminal defence practice with its office in downtown Welland, serving the wider Niagara Region including St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Thorold, Fort Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Port Colborne. Michael Peterson earned a law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2003, after studying criminology and legal and political philosophy at Simon Fraser University and at Carleton University's Department of Law. Before being called to the bar, Peterson worked for the Attorney General of Ontario, the Ombudsman of Saskatchewan, and the Law Courts Education Society of British Columbia.

After being called to the bar, Peterson practised as a criminal defence lawyer at two other law firms, served as duty counsel for Legal Aid Ontario, and worked as a per diem Crown prosecutor before opening the current practice. The firm now handles the full range of criminal matters: charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, drug offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, provincial offences such as Highway Traffic Act and Fire Code violations, matters before administrative tribunals, and appeals up through the Ontario Court of Appeal. Peterson was born and raised in St. Catharines, lived for a time in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and ran a marketing and design business before going to law school.
