About Bellehumeur Law

Bellehumeur Law is a sole practice in downtown London, Ontario, founded by Karen Bellehumeur in January 2018. The firm provides trauma-informed legal services to survivors of sexual violence and advises organizations on preventing sexual abuse, harassment, and discrimination. Karen Bellehumeur spent 23 years as an Assistant Crown Attorney handling cases involving vulnerable witnesses, many of them sexual assault matters, before leaving that role to pursue a Master of Laws at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2015. A PhD from Western University's Faculty of Law followed in February 2023, with a dissertation on legal representation for complainants of sexual violence in the criminal justice system.

The practice represents survivors of sexual assault in criminal proceedings involving section 276 and 278 applications under the Criminal Code, in human rights claims for sexual assault and harassment, and in claims brought by Indigenous survivors of historical abuse at day and residential schools. Bellehumeur Law also handles complaints of maltreatment in sport and advises sport and other organizations on abuse-prevention training. Karen Bellehumeur sits on the Safe Sport advisory committee of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada and co-founded Elevation, an organization working to prevent abuse in youth sport through education.
