gbtlaw is a solo business law practice run out of Oakville, Ontario by W. Grant Buchan-Terrell. Buchan-Terrell founded the firm on January 1, 2000, after earning a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1978 and studying economics at Queen's University in Kingston and the University of Edinburgh. The practice keeps to a narrow lane: selling a business worth more than $500,000, buying one worth more than $1,000,000, and helping business co-owners work out their disagreements without going to court.

The firm sums up its approach as 'Bay Street expertise and service, Main Street accessibility and cost,' aiming to bring the kind of experience larger downtown firms offer without the downtown overhead or the downtown price tag. gbtlaw says it brings over 35 years of business law experience to each file. It keeps its own overhead down partly by delegating complex reorganizations and deal searches to a virtual law clerk the firm's site calls 'Steve,' and it doesn't take on general litigation or a broad range of legal work outside its three practice areas. On its own site, the firm describes its role plainly: 'We solve problems, we don't create or exaggerate them.'
