John Hicks Law Office is a sole practice in Burlington, Ontario, running since 1986. It's built around a generalist docket that includes family law, estate administration and litigation, mediation, business and corporate law, real estate, wills, powers of attorney, contracts, and notary public work. For clients working with a limited budget, the office also offers assisted self-representation: a pay-as-you-go arrangement that covers case review, plain-language explanations of the process, help with court forms, and evidence assessment rather than a full retainer.

John Hicks came to law by way of philosophy. Before Osgoode Hall and an LL.B. from the University of Toronto, Hicks earned a B.A. and an M.A. in philosophy from McMaster University with Honours and Dean's Honours standing, did further philosophy study at Northwestern University on a Canada Council grant, and studied under the Canadian philosopher George Grant. In between, Hicks taught philosophy at Brock University and spent eight years in real estate sales and investment, a background that carries into the firm's real estate and mediation work today.
