About McElderry & Morris

McElderry & Morris is a general practice law firm in downtown Guelph, and its roots reach back to 1921. John Harris McElderry, born in Guelph in 1891, opened a law office in the city that year, after two years of practice in Toronto. The firm took its present name in 1954, when Patrick John Morris joined McElderry to form the partnership. It settled at 84 Woolwich Street in the 1950s and has worked from that address ever since.

Three lawyers carry the practice forward today: Sergio J. Manera, Patrick G. Morris, and Gregory G. Matthews. The Morris and Matthews names reach back to earlier partners, so the firm has kept some continuity across generations. Its work spans civil litigation, business and corporate law, family law, real estate, wills and estates, and personal injury. All told, McElderry & Morris has served Guelph and the surrounding southwestern Ontario region for more than a century.

The neighbourhood

The office sits at 84 Woolwich Street, along the eastern edge of downtown Guelph, where Woolwich Street forms one of the district's boundaries. A couple of doors south, at 74 Woolwich Street, stands the Wellington County Administration Centre, the seat of the surrounding county. This part of downtown is known for its warm limestone architecture and heritage buildings, and landmarks like Guelph City Hall and the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, both National Historic Sites, sit within a short walk. The firm has kept its practice at this address since the 1950s. For visitors, the City of Guelph offers two hours of free street parking nearby, though the private lot next to the building is not for firm visitors.
