About Barnett Law

Barnett Law is a solo practice based in downtown Whitby, Ontario, run under the name of its founder, Athena Narsingh Barnett. The firm handles real estate law, family law, and adoption and fertility law for clients in Whitby, Scarborough, and other Durham Region communities.

Before opening the practice and being called to the Ontario Bar, the founder worked as a project coordinator in an at risk neighbourhood, then held roles with the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Canada Border Services Agency, and interned at family law firms across Canada. That background feeds into a family law practice covering divorce, separation, custody, and support, alongside an adoption and fertility law practice built around surrogacy agreements, donor arrangements, and LGBTQ+ family building, including second-parent adoptions and multi-parent recognition under Ontario's family law rules. The real estate side covers residential purchases and sales, refinancing, and some commercial leasing matters. Clients can meet with the firm in person at its Whitby office.

The neighbourhood

Barnett Law's office is on Mary Street in downtown Whitby, part of the core stretch along Brock, Byron, and Mary Streets. The Town of Whitby describes the area for its historic architecture and mix of local shops, restaurants, and services, with more than 470 businesses in the surrounding downtown. It's a walkable, small-scale commercial strip rather than a highway-front office park, which fits a practice built around one-on-one meetings with real estate and family law clients from Whitby and nearby Durham Region towns.
