What does an immigration lawyer in Halifax do?

An immigration lawyer in Halifax helps people move to Canada, keep their status, or challenge a refusal, and handles the legal strategy behind each step. Immigration is federal, so the decisions are made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), not by a provincial court. A local lawyer prepares permanent residence, work permit, sponsorship, and study permit applications for clients across Halifax, Dartmouth, and Bedford.

The work is mostly application-driven. When a federal decision is wrong in law, though, it can be challenged by judicial review in the Federal Court, which holds sittings in Halifax. A firm that handles both sides can tell you early which path fits your case.

Which immigration programs run through Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia runs provincial routes on top of the federal system, and a Halifax lawyer will match you to the right one. The province operates the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, which nominates workers and graduates for permanent residence through streams tied to in-demand jobs and Express Entry. A nomination doesn't grant status by itself; it strengthens an application that IRCC still decides.

Nova Scotia also takes part in the Atlantic Immigration Program, an employer-driven pathway shared by the four Atlantic provinces. It starts with a job offer from a designated employer, so the route often begins with a company in Bedford or Lower Sackville, not the applicant alone. Lawyers here advise both the worker applying and the business doing the hiring.

What happens if IRCC refuses your application?

If IRCC refuses you, the usual next step is an application for leave and judicial review at the Federal Court, and the deadlines are short. For a decision made inside Canada you generally have 15 days to file, so call a lawyer the week the refusal arrives. The Court doesn't re-decide your case on the merits; it reviews whether the decision was fair and reasonable.

Judicial review runs in two stages, and only cases granted leave reach a hearing. The Federal Court sits in Halifax through the Courts Administration Service registry, so a Nova Scotia file doesn't have to travel. Some refusals are better answered by a stronger fresh application instead, and a good lawyer will tell you which is worth the cost.

How do you choose an immigration firm in Halifax?

Start with the rule about who may charge you. For a fee, only a licensed lawyer, a Quebec notary, or a member of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants may represent you before IRCC, so anyone else taking payment is unauthorized. Ask which programs the firm files most often, who will handle your file, and how it charges. Firms take clients from across Halifax, Dartmouth, and communities like Fall River, so there's usually one within reach.
