What does an administrative lawyer in Halifax do?

An administrative lawyer in Halifax represents people and businesses in disputes with government departments, boards, and tribunals, rather than in ordinary lawsuits between private parties. The work spans a wide field: a denied benefit, a licensing or regulatory decision, a discrimination complaint, or a workplace-injury ruling. When a tribunal gets the law wrong or acts unfairly, a lawyer can also ask for judicial review, which is heard by the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia at the Law Courts on Upper Water Street in Halifax (1815 Upper Water Street). Much of the job is about the right forum and the right deadline, since each board runs on its own rules and getting them wrong early can close a door you can't reopen.

Which boards and tribunals decide these cases in Nova Scotia?

It depends on the subject. Discrimination complaints go to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, which investigates, offers mediation, and can refer a matter to a board of inquiry. Workplace-injury claims run through the Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia, and if you disagree with a final decision you can appeal to the Workers' Compensation Appeals Tribunal, an independent body that reviews the Board's rulings. Utility rates, property assessment appeals, auto insurance, and a range of municipal and licensing matters now sit with the Nova Scotia Regulatory and Appeals Board, which began in 2025 and took over much of the former Utility and Review Board's work. Because Halifax is the provincial capital, many of these bodies are based here, so residents of Dartmouth, Bedford, and Lower Sackville rarely have to travel far for a hearing.

What if you want to challenge a decision in court?

If a tribunal or a government office decides against you, you usually work through that body's own appeal or reconsideration process first, then ask the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia for judicial review. Judicial review isn't a fresh hearing of the facts. The court asks whether the decision was reasonable and the process fair. Deadlines here are short and firm, so someone in Fall River who wants to challenge a ruling should get advice quickly rather than let the window pass. A lawyer can tell you whether review is realistic and what record the court will need.

How do you choose an administrative law firm in Halifax?

Start with a firm that has handled your kind of matter, whether that's a human rights complaint, a compensation appeal, or a regulatory hearing. Ask who will run your file, how they've dealt with the specific board involved, and how they charge, since administrative work is usually billed by the hour rather than on contingency. A firm that knows a tribunal's procedure can save you time and missteps. You can confirm any lawyer's standing on the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society directory.
