About Jeff
Jeff Leuschner is a principal at Smart & Biggar's Ottawa office, where he focuses on drafting and prosecuting patents in electrical and computer engineering. He advises clients on which patenting strategies best support their business goals, weighing options such as trade secret protection and defensive publication against a patent filing. Jeff also helps international companies and foreign firms secure Canadian patent protection, and he regularly prosecutes applications before both the U.S. and Canadian patent offices as well as overseas through foreign associates. Before entering the patent profession he pursued graduate studies in electrical engineering and is a first author on papers published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory and IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. He became a registered patent agent in 2009 and is also registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Jeff holds an M.Sc. and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Queen's University, and he represents Smart & Biggar on the IPIC Patent Committee, which reviews proposed changes to Canadian patent policy and practice.
