About Benchmark Law Corporation

Benchmark Law Corporation is a small business law firm based in Vancouver, with practices in corporate and commercial law, wills and estates, and dispute resolution. Founder Dana McGillivray was called to the British Columbia bar in 2005, then began practicing litigation at a small firm before moving in-house at Doctors of BC, negotiating and drafting contracts with the provincial government. After friends and colleagues running small businesses started asking for advice, McGillivray built Benchmark Law around a simple idea: many small business owners can't afford what a large downtown firm charges, so this firm doesn't try to look like one.

Most work is billed as a flat fee rather than by the hour, and the firm offers a free initial consultation. The corporate practice covers incorporations, partnership and shareholder agreements, employment contracts, commercial leases and business purchase and sale deals, while the wills and dispute resolution practices round out what a small business owner is likely to need over time. Partner Samuel Suk, called to the bar in 2013, focuses on small business law and estate planning and speaks Korean as well as English. Associate counsel Silas Polkinghorne joined from a small litigation firm after a practice focused on human rights and access to justice, and now advises on commercial litigation, including shareholder and commercial tenancy disputes.
