bakerlaw is a Toronto disability, human rights, and employment law practice founded by David Baker, who has practiced law for more than 40 years. On August 1, 2022, the firm joined Ross & McBride LLP, a firm with roots dating back to 1890 that's based in Hamilton, Ontario. The bakerlaw team kept its own office in Toronto and now works as the human rights, employment, and constitutional law group inside the larger, full-service firm.
The practice represents people with disabilities, employees, patients, and students in human rights complaints, employment disputes, and civil litigation, often before the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Its case list traces a long run of appellate work, from Ontario Human Rights Commission v. Simpsons-Sears at the Supreme Court of Canada in 1985 through to Carter v. Canada in 2015, the physician-assisted dying case. In April 2022, after more than ten years at its previous Yonge Street address, the firm moved into its current space at 205 Richmond Street West in downtown Toronto.

By appointmentThe Toronto office sits on the second floor at 205 Richmond Street West, a move the firm made in April 2022 after more than a decade at its previous Yonge Street address. In its own announcement of the move, the firm noted the new location would let it work more closely alongside the Inclusive Design Research Centre, a fitting neighbour for a practice built around disability rights.
It's a working arrangement now, though: bakerlaw operates as the human rights, employment, and constitutional law group of Ross & McBride LLP, a firm whose main office is in Hamilton and whose own history goes back to 1890. Clients dealing with the Toronto team are dealing with a Hamilton-headquartered firm's downtown Toronto outpost, not a stand-alone local shop, and the firm is upfront about that on its own site.
